Spotify is breaking new ground in the world of young music enthusiasts, introducing a pioneering Premium membership pilot specifically designed for kids.

Unlike Spotify Kids, a dedicated app offering a curated selection of singalongs, soundtracks, and playlists, this innovative offering is a parent-supervised Premium membership for users under 13, providing access to a broader range of app features under the guidance of their caregivers.

“As young music explorers embark on a journey of musical discovery with a managed account, this new pilot enables them to relish many of the features and functionality that Spotify users know and love, including personalization features that make music discovery on Spotify so captivating and distinctive,” wrote Spotify.

Premium Family subscribers can add a managed account to their plan, which can then be tailored by parents via in-app controls. This enables parents to block specific tracks or artists, or manage playback of explicit content, including visual media accompanying songs themselves.

Spotify claims the updated Family plan would also provide a solution for parents whose account recommendations (and annual Wrapped data) have been hijacked by their children’s music — Users have long requested a kind of “Parent Mode” that could be activated to filter out kid content.

The pilot is currently only available to users in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden. Learn more about Spotify's new Premium plan for kids.
