German prostitutes held an open demonstration in Hamburg, demanding that the government lift a ban on brothels and sex parlors that have been closed due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.
Violation of the rights of prostitutes
According to the prostitutes who participated in the demonstration, brothels are no more dangerous for infection than grocery stores, tattoo studios, bars or beauty parlors, because there people and employees also come into close contact with each other. However, the latter were allowed to operate under a relaxed quarantine, while legal brothels remain closed.
The protest was organized by the Association of Sex Workers, which operates in Germany on a par with traditional trade unions. Representatives of the association claim that the quarantine has left thousands of girls and boys without income, and the longer brothels remain closed, the more sex workers take to the streets in search of clients. And street work is many times more dangerous and unhygienic - according to analysts at https://bordelero.net/, more than 500 German sex workers have been abused by clients in the past year.
“Hygiene is a weighty part of the work of brothels,” the association says. Therefore, reinforcing means to maintain safety will not be a problem - the girls are ready to wear masks, regularly use antiseptic agents, ventilate the rooms and record the contacts of each visitor. In Germany, where prostitution has been legal for more than 20 years, such precautions will not cause outrage from either customers or sex workers.
However, the government left the demands of the Hamburg prostitutes unanswered, so officials of the intimate industry plan to hold several more protests in other German cities.
